This very rare and important book gives the account of Sammy Tubbs, the hero of the tale: Sammy Tubbs was a child of slave parents, who removed North after President Lincoln issued his proclamation of freedom. At an early age, he became a door-boy at the house of a physician, bearing the name of Dr. Samuel Hubbs. The boy was bright and inquisitive, and the Doctor was kind and communicative, so that in a little time Sammy was practically a pupil of his generous employer, who availed himself of every opportunity to impart physiological knowledge to the inquiring lad. Mrs. Millstone, the wife of a sea-captain, took a fancy to Sammy, and made him a present of a remarkably smart monkey.

Foote, Edward Bliss (b. Cleveland, Ohio, 1829; d. [New York City?] 1906), physician, birth control advocate, father of Edward Bond Foote; worked as a newspaper editor before studying medicine. An early advocate of public hygiene and the general dissemination of physiological knowledge, Foote opposed the elitism of the medical establishment as anti-democratic.
