ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Jake “J.T.” McCord was an African American self-taught folk artist born in Lincoln County, Georgia. He spent nearly 40 years working as a groundskeeper for the city of Thomson, Georgia.
Around 1984, he became interested in painting after watching people taking art lessons at a local paint store. McCord became known for his colorful, imaginative paintings of animals, people, homes, and scenes of rural Southern life.
He frequently painted on plywood and to showcase his artworks, he would nail his paintings to the exterior of his home and would make sure to leave them that way until he felt enough people had seen the work.
His distinctive paintings eventually gained recognition in the American folk-art world. His work has been exhibited at the Morris Museum of Art and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum. He died in 2009.
