Fantastic mid century modern Bitossi ashtray in the Rimini Blue color attributed to the works of Aldo Londi. Although this piece is unsigned, the attached Raymor label marked with the Bitossi company code of "BIT" adds verification to its age and authenticity.
CONDITION:
Crazing to be expected. Small stain visible on the middle of the inside design. No cracks or repairs noted.

Raymor was the brand name of an import company and distributor based in America and active from 1941 until 1980. Although it imported most of its stock, it also oversaw the manufacture of a comparatively small quantity of goods in the US. By the 1950’s Raymor was bringing the work of some of America’s and Europe’s best modern designers into American department stores and boutiques. It was Raymor who helped bring fame and notoriety to Bitossi ceramics.
In 1921, Guido Bitossi established the Maioliche Artistiche Guido Bitossi pottery factory. With the arrival of art director Aldo Londi in 1946, Bitossi entered a new phase that would change the world of Italian ceramics forever. Loved by architects and interior designers worldwide, Bitossi pottery products are a work of art and sought-after items for art and midcentury modern collectors.
Aldo Londi was born in Montelupo in 1911, and started working for a ceramics manufacturer when he was 11 years old. After being taken prisoner in South Africa during WW2, he returned to Italy and in 1946 was appointed artistic director at Bitossi. He held that position for over 50 years, and created thousand of designs for vases, jugs, animals, candle stick holders and other objects.
The Rimini Blu collection of ceramics was created in the early fifties by Aldo. This collection is characterised by the unique blue colouring and irregular texture. Today the collection is regularly the subject of research both for its artistic value, stylistic charm and historical importance.
